Kindergarten
The Kindergarten classroom is prepared each day to meet the developmental needs of the children as they continue to grow. As with all developmental programs, we seek to educate the whole child, not just their intellect. The focus is to provide balanced activities that foster social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development, as well as fine motor and gross motor skills. This also includes emphasis on developing independence, self-discipline, and responsibility. Learning is accomplished through one-to-one, small group, and large group interactions, as well as independent activities. An integrated, thematic approach is used to teach with relevance to the lives of young children.
Language Arts involves children using all modes of communication: reading, writing, spelling, listening, illustrating, and doing. All these areas are drawn together to create learning experiences that involve more than one aspect at a time. Children's literature through the
Open Court Reading Program and the Reading Readiness program will be the foundation for this learning. Both programs allow students to work in small groups with the instruction from the teacher to develop and/or strengthen skills of letter recognition, phonological awareness, oral language, sound/symbol combinations, and handwriting.
Math Their Way is an activity centered program using manipulative materials. Skills learned include such things as patterning, measuring, and comparing concepts of weight, volume, time, and quantity. Students will also experience counting, numeration, addition, subtraction, problem solving, place value, and making and studying graphs.
Science and Social Studies concepts will be explored through various methods as they are integrated into the curriculum.
In addition to these academic areas, spiritual growth is fostered in our classrooms. Bible readings and stories provide a basis for group discussion, as well as our participation in chapel.
All students attend enrichment classes of Music, PE, Drama, Spanish, Computer Lab, Art, Library, and Chapel during the school week.
Kindergarten is an exciting time in the lives of children. They are making great strides in all areas of their development. Kindergarten's report card is a checklist of skills without letter grades. Report cards are prepared and sent home at the end of each semester. Parent-Teacher conferences are hold at the end of the first and third quarters and as needed.
Portfolios
The teacher will use this as a tool for an on-going assessment. Parents are welcome to come in and look over their children's work throughout the year. These are in white binders in the classroom.
