Third Grade

Language Arts and Handwriting

Vocabulary skills and comprehension strategies are taught through the use of trade books of various genres. Reading groups meet individual instructional needs. Reading for pleasure is encouraged with the hope that each child will develop a lifelong love of reading and books. Students use a grammar text and extensive writing assignments to study basic sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, letter writing, dictionary skills, and the use of a glossary and index. Several types of books are created during the course of the year. Spelling is completely individualized, based on student mistakes made on their class work. By the end of the year, students use cursive handwriting for all class work. Daily practice builds neatness and clarity.

Social Studies

The third grade social studies curriculum centers on a study of Oklahoma City. It involves discussions and field trips dealing with the geography, ethnic diversity, religious diversity, economic structures, culture, government, and history of the city. Students work with demographic statistics in the form of graphs, timetables, timelines, line and bar graphs, pictographs, and grid maps.

Science

The students study a unit of Earth Science introducing the relationships between the Earth, Sun and Moon, using models to understand rotation, revolution, and eclipses, as well as the physical characteristics of each celestial body. A unit of Physical Science includes a study of matter, energy, force, and simple machines. A unit of Biological Science focuses on how the life cycles of plans and animals develop as they mature. Additional units examining the use of natural resources, and the interaction of elements in different ecosystems are added as time permits.

Mathematics

The year begins with a review of numeration, addition and subtraction facts. New material covers addition and subtraction of four and five digit numbers and more difficult measurements. Emphasis is on mastery of multiplication facts. Students work with story problems and geometry, studying volume, area, and angles. They continue the study of fractions and place value to the millions.

Enrichments

Students in third grade have specialized instruction in music and Spanish during the week. They visit the library and computer lab and participate in Religion, Drama, and Art classes. They attend Chapel twice a week, and Physical Education several times a week..
