Sod House Project
St.
John’s
Episcopal School celebrated the Land Run Day and the
Centennial in a truly historic way!
Mrs.
Emler’s class at St. John’s Episcopal School stepped
back in history on April 18 and built an authentic sod house
to celebrate the pioneers who had to survive in these
structures after the land run of 1889.
This was an all day adventure with a little help from
the higher grades, parents and other wonderful volunteers.
They
built the 12x12 house out of 6000 square feet of sod.
The walls were 2 feet thick which would help to keep
out the cold and other bad weather.
The students helped place the sod in neat rows to
build the walls which stood about 6 ft. high.

Pegs rather than nails were used, just like the
settlers, to add a door and rafters for a canvas ceiling.
Once the house was built it was left on display for
about a week then the sod was sold to parents and friends
for use in their yards.
The students had a great time even though it was very
hard work and they were covered in dirt.

Come by St. John’s at 5401 N. Brookline and see a
whole set of pictures showing the progress of the house.
